The biggest story to come out of day eight at the 2007 World Series of Poker were the two champions that never were. Playing at twin final tables, Justin Bonomo entered play with a massive chip lead only to have kings cracked by aces, while Phil Ivey overcame a deficit only to lose heads up to fellow Atlantic City pro Chris Reslock. Here’s a look at the action on the day;
- With twenty-five players left, JC Tran held the chip lead in Event 12 - $1,500no-limit hold’em (6 max), but a series of unfortunate events left him out in fifteenth. Heading to the final, Jason Warner holds a slight lead over Brian Miller and David Zeitlin.
- Greg Mueller has his second chip lead of the series, ending day one of event 13 -$5,000 pot-limit hold’em, with T228,000. Dan Alspach is in second with T196,000, Gavin Griffin third with T152,000. Also in the six-digits; Alex Melikow, Scott Fischmann and Sean Buchanan
- Event 14 -$1,500 seven-card stud, is lead by two unknowns; Avner Levy and Roger Barlozo. Hot on their tail is 2004 main event third-place finisher Josh Arieh.
- According to good friend and backer Tomy Vu, Vinny Vinh is alive. The Houston-based pro’s disappearance had the community speculating the worst. Glad you’re ok, Vinny.
For Bonomo, this was the second time in eight months he was taken out of a major tournament late by running kings into aces. This time, the beneficiary was Will Durkee; it was Durkee who got all-in with As-Ah vs. Bonomo’s Ks-Kc. The board came Qs-5d2c 4s 8h, giving Durkee the pot. One hand later, Bonomo was out, while Durkee was on his way to the bracelet.
