BIO

Doyle Brunson’s name is synonymous with poker. It doesn’t matter if you are talking about televised tournaments, or almost secretive high limit cash games. You could be talking about the outlaw days of the Texas road gamblers, or the virtual Wild West of modern Internet play. Doyle has done it all, and it doesn’t look like he plans on slowing down.

Doyle Brunson was born on August 10, 1933 in the small Texas town of Longworth. Like many kids growing up in Texas, Doyle was exposed to poker at an early age. Throughout high school and college, poker was just a form of entertainment for Doyle as he pursued his dream to play professional basketball. Doyle was so good at basketball, that while attending nearby Hardin-Simmons University, he was drafted by the Minneapolis Lakers. His dream of playing in the NBA was cut short when his leg was crushed by a ton of sheet rock in an industrial accident. With his leg in a cast, and his NBA career over before it began, Doyle completed his education, and received an MBA in administrative education.

Soon after graduating with his MBA, Doyle took a job selling business machines. This job may have been even shorter lived than his basketball career. He soon realized that he could make more money playing one night of poker than he could by working for a full month as a salesman. That’s when Doyle became a fulltime Texas Road Gambler. He teamed up with Amarillo Slim and Sailor Roberts, traveling from town to town throughout Texas, Oklahoma and Louisiana, making money and honing his skill as a poker player.

Life for a professional gambler at that time was not easy. While most players in today’s landscape only have to worry about going bust at the table; Doyle also had to worry about getting robbed, arrested, or cheated. While all those things did happen along the way, Brunson was able to become successful enough that he finally moved his family out to Vegas where gambling was legal and the competition was much more competitive.

In 1976 Doyle won the World Series of Poker $10,000 No Limit Hold’em Event which netted him over $200,000 in prize money. He followed that up by winning the main event again the following year, this time earning over $300,000. Following up on his recent success, in 1978 he published a poker strategy book called “How I Made Over $1,000,000 Playing Poker”. Later renamed “Doyle Brunson’s Super System”, it is considered by most players to be the poker player’s Bible. It featured instruction on the most popular forms of poker with sections written by Mike Caro, Chip Reese, David Sklansky, Joey Hawthorne, and Bobby Baldwin.

Over the next decade Brunson withdrew from tournament poker and instead focused his energies on the very profitable side games that could be found in many of the Las Vegas casinos. During this time he played regularly at games where the blinds were at $4000/$8000 and was a founding member of the “Corporation”. The “Corporation” was a group of professional poker players who pooled their money to take on banking billionaire Andy Beal. These heads up matches with Beal consisted of $100,000/$200,000 blinds with tens of millions of dollars being won and lost during every session. While he still continues to play in the largest cash games in Vegas, the recent influx of dead money into major tournaments has brought him back to the tournament circuit.

In 2005 Doyle won his record tying 10 th bracelet at the world series of poker when he took home first place in the $5,000 No Limit Texas Hold’em short-handed event. Johnny Chan is the only other player to have 10 WSOP tournament wins. Doyle has also found success in the World Poker Tour having placed in the money 4 times and winning the Legends of Poker tournament held at the Bicycle Casino. Doyle is also a regular on GSN High Stakes Poker as well as numerous other televised poker events.

While most of the old Texas road gamblers have faded from the public eye, Doyle has shown the unique ability to not only stay current, but also increase his marketability and stature in the poker world. He can often be found playing at his own online poker room (www.DoylesRoom.com) and his latest news can be found at his personal website www.DoyleBrunson.com. Brunson has also recently re-released some of his previous poker writing and has even penned a new poker strategy book, “Super System 2” with the help of today’s top pros.

Even in his 70’s Doyle is still a force to reckon with at the table, and he doesn’t show any sign of slowing down.

Amusing anecdote: When I first started playing with Doyle, we'd play in out of the way places because some of the well known players didn't want public scrutiny. I would ask Doyle about the poker game, but he would always talk about the food spread at the game. He weighed 400 pounds and he'd say to me, “Look at those pork chops” or “Tell me if you've ever tasted a better sweet potato than those.” He seemed to get much more delight from eating than playing poker.
