Nicknamed “The Professor” for his cool analytical demeanor at the poker table, Howard Lederer is one of today’s most recognized poker players. The “Professor’s” recent celebrity status is due to a combination of WPT and WSOP tournament successes as well as his commentating work for Fox Sports. Howard also has a line of instructional videos and runs the Howard Lederer Fantasy Camp that further adds credence to his “Professor” nickname.
Before Howard was one of the top poker players in the country, he was one of the top young chess players in New York. While playing in the NY chess clubs, Lederer stumbled across poker being played for relatively small stakes. Howard switched his focus from chess to poker but was not immediately successful. In fact Howard was constantly going broke and would often have to borrow money in order to rebuild his bank roll in the smaller limit games. Playing at the Mayfair Club with fellow future pros Dan Harrington and Erick Seidel, Howard started to improve and soon became a consistent winner. In 1994 Howard moved out to Las Vegas in search of higher stakes action.
Throughout the rest of the 90’s Howard continued to be a winner at the Vegas cash games and even dabbled in some of the World Series of Poker tournaments. In 2000 Howard started to focus more on tournaments and won the WSOP Omaha 8 Hi Lo $5000 tournament. The following year the Professor won the $5000 Ducs to Seven Low Draw event at the World Series of Poker. Since then Howard has made numerous final tables at the World Series of Poker and World Poker Tour, including two WPT wins.
When Lederer is not at the poker table he can be found providing commentary for FSN’s Poker Superstars broadcasts as well as playing online at FullTiltPoker.com, a site that he helped develop. Howard lives in Las Vegas with his wife Suzie and their son Mattias.

Amusing anecdote: During one of Andy Beal’s head-up matches against our coalition of players, Howard and I each lost $2,000,000 to Andy. The coalition won for the trip, but Howard was very disappointed by his result. I was content to sit out future matches, but Howard wanted to prove that he had been the victim of a bad run of cards. The next three times Andy came to town, Howard got his revenge, winning convincingly each time.
