Aces vs. Eights: Truly A Dead Mans Hand

After seeing thousands upon thousands of hands not too much fazes me anymore. But after seeing this hand I just had to share it. For those of you that hate bad beat stories, I won’t be offended if you stop reading right here, but fear not, I am not complaining. I was playing very low stakes online yesterday, and all I could type into the chat box was “Ha” after the following hand went down.

While playing a cash game I held pocket Aces, and raised to 6x BB in middle position. Action folds to the small blind who re-raises all-in to 23BB. Everyone folds, I of course make the call.

The flop comes Kd Qd 8h . Not the best flop for Aces, but we’ll see what happens.

Turn: As. Sweet. Top set.

River: 8c. Nice. Best full house.

My excitement last for about two seconds until the small blind reveals 8d 8s and I loose to quads. Not the first time anyone ever had pulled quads on me, but the way it went down was just too perfect for him. I had a dominating hand preflop - he gets lucky and catches bottom set on the flop - I get very lucky and catch a third ace on the turn only to have him catch his one-outer on the river.

Anyway, no bid deal. I just found the hand entertaining. Just remember to take your bad beats in stride and know that skilled play will win in the long term.

Thanks for listening. Keep reading. Keep playing smart.
