Legends of Poker - Season 3 - Aug 31, 2004
The 2004 Legends of Poker event featured the single greatest
living legend of poker, The Godfather himself, Doyle Bruson.
Just like the other 667 players, Brunson ponied up $5,000
to buy into the event held at the Bicycle Casino in Los Angeles
on August 28th 2004.
Brunson was joined by tournament professionals Joe Awada
and Lee Wadkinson, along with Pete Lawson, Tom Lee, and Grant
Helling. In a firestorm of action, four players were eliminated
within the first hour of play, leaving Brunson and Wadkinson
to fight for the title. Brunson went into the match with only
1.6 million chips compared to the over five million of Wadkinson,
but this was the Legends of Poker, and Brunson would not lie
down that easily.
Early on Brunson slow played his flopped straight and called
the all-in bet of Lee Wadkinson after he moved in on the turn.
Doyle continued to chip away, and won the last hand when his
nine kicker bested Wadkinson after both players matched their
queen on the flop. The crowd went wild for the living legend
of poker, Doyle smiling all the way, as he tipped his hat
while taking down first place and the almost $1.2 million
dollar prize.
