Mandalay Bay Poker Championship - Season 5 -
Jun 08, 2006
Season five of the World Poker Tour welcomed a new venue
to its impressive slate of tournament hosts when the first
annual Mandalay Bay Poker Championship kicked off on June
4, 2006 at Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino in Las Vegas,
NV. Fittingly, the final table of this brand new event was
occupied by six players who were all making their televised
World Poker Tour final table debuts.
The World Poker Tour’s own Alex Outhred, who won his
entry into the event via a last minute $1,000 satellite, reached
the final table with a small chip lead over his closest competitor,
Burt Boutin. Outhred has been as an associate producer on
the World Poker Tour since season three. Despite his good
run, Outhred would finish in 4th place.
Perhaps making one of the boldest calls the World Poker Tour
has ever seen, with the championship on the line, Joe Tehan
decided his 9-8 offsuit was good enough to call Boutin’s
all-in reraise for another 1.5 million in chips. Boutin showed
A-10 offsuit, but a zany flop of 10-9-9 all but sent him packing.
An ace on the turn gave Boutin four live cards to stay alive,
but the 8 on the river gave Tehan the title and just over
$1 million in prize money.
Professional poker player Brad Booth and recreational players
Al Stonum and Steve Vincent filled out the final table.
