Poker Quiz - April 20, 2007

The Poker Quiz

You are playing a short-handed, low stakes NL cash game with five other players. After being crippled in a pot just a few minutes prior, you only have 18bb left.

A middle position player opens the pot with a standard size 3xbb raise. The cut-off calls. You are on the button with A 9 and decide to see a flop, making the call. Both blinds call and five players see a flop of J 8 7. The small blind checks, and the big blind leads out for 5bb. Action folds around to you.

The Solution

Re-raise all-in.

With over 20bb in the pot you have to re-raise all-in. With your draw you are either a favorite or dead even against any two cards, unless you the big blind has exactly 9 10. When you raise all-in there will be 38bb in the pot and he will only have to call 10bb more. He will be pot committed with almost anything, giving you an opportunity to more than double up.
