Poker Quiz - January 11, 2007

The Poker Quiz

You are seated at a $5/10 No Limit cash game. In middle position you open with a standard raise of $30 with A J . Action folds to the big blind who makes the call. The flop comes A 6 2 . The button checks and you decide to check behind him. The turn is a J giving you top two pair and the nut flush draw. The big blind leads out with a pot sized bet, you raise to $170 and are called after some hesitation. The turn is the 5 . The big blind checks.

The Solution

Bet.

More specifically a value bet. After you re-raised on fourth street and were called, you have to assume you are up against relatively strong hand. More then likely they also have a good spade, a smaller two pair or hit a set on the flop. When your opponent checks the river with four spades on board he fears that he may not have the best hand anymore. This is a good time to lay a value bet hoping for a crying call. Bet somewhere around a quarter to a third of the pot ($100-$130).
