Poker Quiz - July 26, 2007

The Poker Quiz

You are playing a 45 player online sit-and-go. You have played well and are down to the final five remaining players. Play has been very passive at the final table, with a single pre-flop raise usually taking down the pot. You have an average stack of 14,000 with blinds of 600-1,200.

The chip leader with 21,000 opens the pot for a 3,600 raise. The player in middle position re-raises and pushes all-in for 11,600. From the button you have 7 7. What do you do?

The Solution

Fold.

At a passive table a raise from under the gun means more than average strength; an all-in re-raise should scare you even more. In this situation you will almost never be more than 50% to win the pot. You have nothing invested in this pot more than your ante and can easily get away from this hand. You should get out of the way and hope that the chip leader makes the call, possibly moving up a spot in the payout scale. With blinds at 600-1,200 and a 14,000 stack, you can still hope to get your money in a better spot.
